Iam Coulter - Theatre
Theatre has been my life's work. Initially focused on acting, the opportunity to lead a promising Shakespeare company expanded my scope to include arts administration, directing, teaching and lots of Shakespeare. After eight highly transformative and successful years as the artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company in Calgary, AB, I chose to return to the life of a freelance artist in order to pursue my passions more independently. In 2019, I launched my own company Iam Shakespeare through which I offer many workshops, and will ultimately be producing Shakespeare and Shakespeare inspired theatre productions.
I also serve as the head speaker coach for TEDxYYC 2020.
I have worked with Shakespeare & Company, Citadel Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Mystery Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Junction and The Shakespeare Company. In 2019 I performed a short solo piece entitled Desperate Shakespeare at the Calgary Clown Festival. An expanded one act version of the show will be presented at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in 2020. I will be in Edmonton for the Skirtsafire Festival in February 2020 performing in Troilus and Cressida with Tiger's Hearts Collective.
As the artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company I had the pleasure of directing many of my favourite Shakespeare plays, including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, As You Like It, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Richard III, Henry VI Part III, Much Ado about Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, and Twelfth Night.
Most recently I directed the Calgary premiere of Shakespeare in Love for Morpheus Theatre.
As a teacher I work in many different environments, from high school students to professional actors. I offer private coaching and public workshops, and teach as a guest instructor at institutions such as Morpheus Theatre, Artstrek, Calgary Actor's Studio, and Rosebud School of the Arts. Most recently I led a four day clown intensive for Rosebud School of the Arts in Rosebud Alberta.
